Artist
Niamh Cunningham
Niamh Cunningham is a visual artist working in Beijing for more than a decade. Her work is focused on ecological insights and linked to themes of collective transformation. She works mostly with paints, and employs mixed media and photographic processes in developing new techniques such as "Sucrose Series". Light and transparency are often signatures in her work.

Nature has always been an important inspiration on Niamh Cunningham's work , particularly Trees . At the beginning of 2020, Niamh Cunningham began the sociological ecological art practice"The Memory Palace of Tree Stories". This is a gathering of stories about trees from different people around the globe.

She has developed a mixed media technique using sugar crystalisation. Here at Xuliaoyuan Museum there are two original sucrose works ( the oval shaped works ) and also process prints from other works in this series. The Sucrose Series is a metaphor for the mixture of unnatural materials in our biosphere and the efforts made to keep the integrity and the beauty of the natural world . Apart from the surface crenulation there is also interesting things happening near the surface of the paper , where ink and sugar are influencing each other , pushing each other during crystalisation .This process of shifting of colour continues with crystalisation after the creation event is over so the painting continues to grow even after the artist is finished working on it .
In 2023 she was awarded public funding in Ireland forher sociological –ecological art practice -'The Memory Palace of Tree Stories' ( Carlow County Council Creative Ireland program). More recently shewas awarded a place at the prestigious A4 International Art Residency in Chengdu later in the year 2024 . She is currently gathering one minute trees on video. This socio – eco art practice allows people to explore their relationship and reconnect to the natural world . The artist believes sharing these stories deepens our awareness for our fragile planet , it also fosters community and may even help us understand each other during these ecologically challenging times. She gathers these Tree Stories from people to exhibit in physical spaces at different venues around the world.
